Peer counselling for people with physical disabilities

SUPPORT IN FINDING A NEW PATH

As a peer counsellor, I want to support people whose mobility has become limited or been lost due to illness, injury or another cause. I use a wheelchair myself and know what coping with limited mobility means day to day.

Sarah Briti Tartes in rehabilitation – a peer counsellor who lives with a physical disability herself

My experience of living with a physical disability

I was born two months premature and my mobility is limited, I get around in a wheelchair. I have learned to adapt, find new possibilities and live an independent, meaningful life. It is from this experience that my wish to support people facing similar life changes was born.

Read my story

Adapting to limited mobility can affect a person's self-esteem, self-perception, relationships, independence and future plans.

My aim is to support people in

  • finding a new goal and meaning
  • adapting to a changed situation and regaining confidence
  • finding ways to cope with anxiety and negative thoughts
  • reorganising everyday life and increasing independence
  • finding suitable assistive devices and practical solutions
  • shaping their identity when life has changed

I don't believe one and the same solution suits everyone. Every person comes with their own story, needs and possibilities, and that is what I want my work to start from.

Every person's story is different, but no one should feel on their journey that they have to cope with everything alone.
